Walking for Camp Crescent Moon

Camp Crescent Moon is more than just a summer camp. Yes, it gives kids a chance to learn how to be responsible, how to take part in typical camp activities.  Yes, it gives them a chance to have fun in the beautiful surroundings of Temescal Canyon, and yes it helps them grow in strength and maturity.  But Camp is an integral part of our program at the Sickle Cell Disease Foundation, that’s why we’re walking.

Through the week-long summer camp experience, children with sickle cell disease get to meet other kids who are facing the same challenges they are.  They have an opportunity to form a bond that is as deep as they might have with a family member. They also become very attached to their camp counselors.  Most of our counselors are former campers, so our children look to these young adults as true role models, young adults who are living each day with sickle cell.  Most of all, our professional staff of doctors and nurses get to see their young patients in the real world, to find out how they react away from the clinic or hospital.

The friendships we make become a tapestry of connectingthreads, binding children to camp staff and the Foundation, weaving parents to nurses and doctors, creating a basis of support for families living with sickle cell disease.

Because of these connections, the Foundation is often called upon to resolve school issues or provide guidance regarding hospital treatment. Families refer their friends to us when sickle cell disease seems to be too much to bear.

So you see, we’re raising money for camp, but it’s more than camp. We’re walking to make connections for children and families, we’re walking to help form bonds with care givers, and we’re walking to improve the lives of people with this disease.

Please walk with us.

If you have already registered or made a donation to one of our walkers, we thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

Sickle Cell Disease Foundation of California
